Ambulances On Display at EMS World Expo 2016

We’re super excited to be in New Orleans, Louisiana for the EMS World Expo 2016. The Expo is being hosted in conjunction with NAEMT at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The Exhibit Hall opened today at 11:00 am and will be open until 6:00 pm. Hours are also tomorrow, October 6th from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm and Friday, October 7th from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. We have representatives from Braun direct, as well as our dealer network, in Booth #515. There, we’re displaying three new ambulances, along with previously unreleased crash test footage available first to Expo attendees.

“EMS World Expo is a great show that we look forward to every year,” says Braun Industries’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Chad Brown. “This year, we are particularly excited about debuting new crash test footage from side impact and rollover tests we conducted in June. EMS World Expo attendees will be the first to see the new crash test videos and have an opportunity to talk with our team about how the data collected translates into real world ambulance safety and design.”

EMS World Expo is billed as the largest EMS event in North America. Hosted in partnership with NAEMT, the event is an EMS conference and trade show that brings together over 5,100 EMS professionals. The event will include 140-plus educational sessions led by top EMS industry experts, and an Exhibit Hall featuring state-of-the-art technology, products, and services from over 350 exhibitors. We will be one such exhibitor, displaying three ambulance models in Booth #515. Our EZ 02 Lift™ oxygen cylinder lift and storage compartment solution is also a finalist for a Top Innovation Award. The product will be judged and evaluated during the expo, and winners will be announced at the end.

We will have three new ambulances on display in Booth #515 – a Type III Demo Express, a Type I Demo Express Plus, and a Type I Chief XL Ram.  The Braun Demo Express Type III is built on a Ford E-350 chassis. It features the EZ 02 Lift™ system in the exterior curbside storage compartment. It also has a Braun exclusive EZ Glide™ Door, LED angled and dome lights, Whelen lights, and an aluminum solid body the manufacturer is known for. The Express Plus is a Type I demo unit from Braun dealer, Penn Care, Inc. Built on a Ford F-450 chassis, the vehicle features 72” of headroom and Liquid Springs suspension for a comfortable ride. LED angled lights curbside, restocking hinges and an inventory control system provide enhanced working conditions in the compartment. It also has fuel splash guards, an EZ Glide Door™, and an all-aluminum solid body with no wood. The last emergency vehicle inside Booth #515 will be a Chief XL I Ram 4500 4×4 from Christian County. The ambulance has a V4 seat belt harness, EVS seat on mobile one, Mermaid MediKool refrigerator, locking drug box, Buell air horns, and a dual LED license plate holder.

Representatives from Braun direct, as well as our nationwide network of new ambulance dealers, will be in attendance. Visitors are encouraged to stop by to tour the units on display and view the previously unreleased crash test footage. EMS World Expo attendees will get the first look before the videos and crash test data are released to the general public in late October.

If you’re not attending the Expo, but would still like to learn more about our crash testing, we encourage you to visit www.BraunStrong.com.

The City of New Orleans Goes Braun

Here at Braun Industries, we get excited about each and every opportunity to work with a new department. Last year, we were particularly pleased to bid on a set of specifications for the City of New Orleans. Working with our regional ambulance dealer for the area, Lone Star Emergency Vehicles, we were educated on the needs and wants of one of the busiest EMS departments in the country. Now, the finished units are leaving our plant a few at a time, and we are beyond proud to deliver them to The Big Easy.

Tim Hutchens, President of Lone Star Emergency Vehicles, has the following to say about the New Orleans order.

We have had an ongoing relationship for over twenty-years with the City of New Orleans EMS. As big cities go, you would be hard-pressed to find another EMS service that is more passionate, more tenured, more experienced, and has the variety of trauma calls than the team of professionals at NOLA EMS.  Fully understanding the unique requirements of their EMS service is of paramount importance to us as we provide the appropriate tools they need to save lives.

Braun Liberty Ambulance for New Orleans

A complete gallery of images can be seen on our website.

The emergency vehicles that serve the City of New Orleans face a unique set of challenges. For one, they are on emergency calls for service 70-75% of the time. In 2012, the department ran 55,000 calls! Additionally, the tough urban environment of the city streets exposes them to a lot of wear and tear. With little downtime, NOLA’s ambulance units must be prepared to hit the pavement … and stand up to it!

Previously, the City had invested in MedTec units for their fleet. When the manufacturer went out of business last year, New Orleans was forced to seek out a new emergency vehicle provider. To mitigate their risk of a similar situation down the road, New Orleans approached their most recent review of ambulance companies with a different attitude. They were looking for a company that would stand the test of time. Furthermore, they were seeking a partner – someone they could build a long-term relationship with.

New Orleans EMS Chief Carl Flores has the following to say about their choice to work with Braun Industries.

Selecting the right vendor for our new ambulances was critical. We had a unique set of bid specifications that demanded a lot. Most importantly, we weren’t looking for someone to just sell us some ambulances and move on. We were looking for a long-term partner. With an initial plan to build over 20 units, and then convert the entire fleet, a lot rested on our decision.

Braun Industries was chosen as the winning bidder because they have 40 years of proven commitment to the EMS industry and their customers. We talked with some of the largest departments in the country and they all had exceptional reviews about working with Braun Industries. In the end, Braun was able to deliver on all of our requests – when no other manufacturer could. They went above and beyond on proving to us they were in it for the long haul.

The first completed Braun ambulance was delivered to The City of New Orleans on February 3, 2013, just in time for Super Bowl XLVII. Additional units are coming out of production on March 11, 2013 and March 25, 2013. All units are the Braun Liberty ambulance model on a Ford F450 Super Cab chassis. Countless customizations have been made to the module to ensure NOLA received all of the features they needed to best serve their community.

Unique ambulance design points include an all aluminum interior; this is new for New Orleans. There is also a custom designed aluminum console to store NOLA’s mobile data terminal, a siren, radios, a wireless keyboard, and flashlights. The box includes a rear module camera and backup camera, along with a GPS feature, which has been built into the MasterTech IV Vista Screens. The box also contains custom mounts for the specific equipment NOLA uses to make it easier and safer for the crew to access it and provide critical care.

Congratulations again to The City of New Orleans on their new Braun ambulances! It has been a pleasure working with you and Lone Star on your emergency vehicles. We look forward to serving The Big Easy and its residents for years to come!

What is Change Notice 8 and What Does it Mean for Your Department?

braun-ambulances-cn-8-compliant-small

In May of 2015, the draft version of KKK Change Notice 8 was released for public review. The draft of this document was released for public comment for a period of one month, in which time anyone was welcome to comment on potential changes. After this time, the change notice went into effect on any order placed after July 1, 2015. As in years past, it has been decided at the state level which states choose to follow KKK-A1822-F in full, part or not at all. The same held true for the regulations required by Change Notice 8. Several states quickly adopted the change notice, while some chose not to require it and some chose to provide their states with an extended period of time before they were required to follow the guideline, such as the state of Massachusetts, which does not require the Change Notice 8 be followed until July 1, 2016, giving their agencies an additional year to budget for the changes and additional expenses.

The two most significant changes brought on by change notice 8 to KKK-A1822-F are the addition of recommended practices from the Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE). Namely SAE J3026 Ambulance Patient Compartment Seating Integrity and Occupant Restraint and SAE J3027 Ambulance cot Integrity, Retention, and Patient Restraint (in all module seated positions). Both guidelines from SAE describe the test forces which manufacturers of seating and patient cots must certify to. Those G-forces are 22.5 Gs in a frontal impact and 26.0 Gs in a side impact. This is roughly equal to the initial forces seen in a head-on crash between a 10,000-pound ambulance and a 3,000-pound car, both traveling at 55 miles per hour.

While much of the focus was given to the J3027 portion of Change Notice 8 because of its potential to significantly affect the cost of every new ambulance, depending on the type of compliant cot restraint system each agency decided to select, not much focus was given to the J3026 section of this change notice.

As you will see in the below excerpt from KKK change notice 8, J3026 applies to all seats in the ambulance module. This includes attendant seats, CPR seats, squad bench seating and or any additional seating in the ambulance module.

3.11.4 PATIENT COMPARTMENT SEATING
Delete Paragraph 3.11.4, and replace it with the following paragraphs:
All seats in the patient compartment shall conform to all applicable FMVSS requirements and SAE J3026. The seats(s) shall be installed according to the seat manufacturer’s directions.

braun-ambulances-change-notice-8-compliant-small

The SAE J3026 requirement is intended to simulate the impact of a crash sustained while belted in the ambulance module. ATD’s are required to be used and minimum criteria must be achieved from each ATD in order to meet the requirements of this test. Each seated position must be tested in both a front and side impact criteria. Below shows the details of SAE J3026.

4.1 Each Seating System shall be tested using one of the two following methods:

4.1.1 The Pedestal Seating System shall be mounted to a rigid sled device utilizing the mounting hardware locations and type(s) (e.g., number and type of fastener) prescribed by its manufacturer). The sled shall be capable of reproducing the crash pulse curves described in SAE J2917, Occupant Restraint and Equipment Mounting Integrity – Frontal Impact System-Level Ambulance Patient Compartment and SAE J2956, Occupant Restraint and Equipment Mounting Integrity – Side Impact System-Level Ambulance Patient Compartment.

4.1.2 The Bench or Jump Seating System shall include representative structure sufficient to fully attenuate ATD driven loading during performance of the sled test. The Bench or Jump Seating System and representative structure shall be mounted to a rigid sled device. The sled shall be capable of reproducing the crash pulse curves described in SAE J2917, Occupant Restraint and Equipment Mounting Integrity – Frontal Impact System-Level Ambulance Patient Compartment and SAE J2956, Occupant Restraint and Equipment Mounting Integrity – Side Impact System-Level Ambulance Patient Compartment.

As you can see from the documentation above, SAE J3026 requires that all manufacturers of seats being installed in an ambulance module are required to test their seating and belting configurations. This requirement holds true for seat manufacturers or any manufacturer that produces their own CPR or squad bench seating.

Braun worked with CAPE testing facilities through several tests to develop a seating configuration that meets the requirements set forth in KKK-A1822-F Change Notice 8. Supporting documentation can be provided as needed to assure our customers that our seating has been tested and is compliant with Change Notice 8.

Braun Ambulances Introduces Jason Adair as New Regional Sales Manager

We are so pleased to announce that we recently named Jason Adair as Region 3 Regional Sales Manager. Jason will provide training and support to our dealers in Region 3, as well as direct factory sales and support to areas not covered by a dealer. Braun Industries’ Region 3 includes the states of California, Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah.

Jason joined the Braun Industries’ family in March of 2015. He was seeking a position close to home, as he lives in Van Wert, Ohio. He started as a Service/Remount Technician and then transferred to our quality department as the EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) Specialist.  He was named the Region 3 Regional Sales Manager in June 2016. To effectively serve in his new role, he has finished part 1 of the sales professional certification process and will have the remainder completed by the end of 2016.

Jason’s educational background includes an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from the University of Northwestern Ohio. He was a scholarship athlete at UNOH, spending time on the University’s motorsports team that traveled the East Coast racing against the best competition in the US at dirt tracks. More importantly, he has also spent time in the Fire/EMS Industry. He has his Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications and was a Firefighter for Fort Leavenworth in Kansas – the same department his father once served as Fire Chief for. Growing up around the department, Jason has many fond memories and during his time as an active Firefighter, he was granted a lifesaver award along with his crew in saving a life on the post. He completed his EMT training in Virginia Beach, VA and was an EMT for a period of time. In addition, he has haz-mat awareness, operations, and technician qualifications.

The Region 3 Regional Sales Manager is responsible for assisting dealers and customers in the region with orders, questions and concerns they have regarding Braun ambulances. There are currently 2 dealers in the region, Hughes Fire Equipment and Hi-Tech Emergency Vehicles. Jason also handles direct sales for our customers in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.

When asked about his new position with us, Jason had the following to say, “Braun is by far the best job I have had in my life. Working at a facility where we build ambulances and knowing the importance of safety, quality and innovation that we put into these ambulances and why we do it is a wonderful feeling. The people at Braun are amazing and hardworking; they make it easy to love your job. The amount of training and time that Braun is willing to give to its employees is excellent and second to none. To have the owner of the company come out and meet everybody and work in every department at Braun just speaks volumes about Kim and the rest of the company.”
