We Just Wrapped Up Our Annual Sales Meeting

We attend a lot of great events each year. We’re also blessed to host some of our own. One such special event is our Annual Ambulance Sales Meeting. It’s an opportunity for us to catch up in person with our incredible dealer partners. Dealer principles and their sales representatives join us for a 2-day event to discuss Braun ambulance sales and products. More importantly, it gives us a chance to honor them for their achievements the previous year.

This year, we held our Annual Ambulance Sales Meeting at Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee on March 14th and 15th.  It was truly an honor to explore the great city of Nashville with our dealers. The Nashville Fire Department is a Braun Ambulance customer, which made the city an extra special place to host in. “Thank you” to Commander Bryan Jones for joining us on both days of our meeting. We’re certain when Commander Jones retires from EMS, the city will hire as ambassador and tour guide extraordinaire!

Both days were jam packed with information and activities. We had educational sessions from Braun direct, as well as some of our vendors. As with years past, the most well received session was the Customer Panel. It included Chief Pete O’Leary from the City of Fond du Lac, Commander Bryan Jones from Nashville Fire Department, and Director Tim Gault from Greenville County EMS. These customers were a wealth of knowledge and it was a privilege hearing from them. Thank you to all three gentlemen for joining us and sharing your thoughts.

We closed each night with an awards ceremony. The first night, we recognized the ambulance sales representatives that sold their first Braun in 2017. We do this in a special tie cutting ritual, but don’t worry, we provide the ties. Congratulations to the following representatives that were honored:

  • Andy Siebers, Hughes Fire Equipment
  • Chuck Evans, Penn Care/C2
  • John Castles, All Area Fire & Rescue
  • PJ Lukasewski, Penn Care
  • Tracie Richards, Hughes Fire Equipment
  • Jason Gerhardt, Braun Industries

The second night, the awards were bigger and better! It is always a visual confirmation of the hard work and commitment that happens behind the scenes at each dealership. A special congratulations to the following representative and dealerships:

Ohio Ambulance Manufacturer, Braun Industries, at EMS Today Show

Ohio ambulance manufacturer, Braun Industries, will be participating as an exhibitor at EMS Today 2018. Also known as The JEMS Conference & Exposition, the event will take place February 21-23, 2018 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, NC. Braun Industries will be in Booth #1315 with three new ambulances on display.

Produced by JEMS, the leader in EMS education, EMS Today is one of the premier conference and exhibition events in the EMS Industry. The conference rotates to a different city each year and draws over 4,500 EMS professionals from around the world. With over 200 conference sessions and workshops, it includes hands-on experiences, CEH (continuing education hours) opportunities, and networking events. In addition, it hosts an exhibition with over 250 companies, displaying products and services specific to EMS professionals. Braun Industries attends each year as an exhibitor.

“EMS Today kicks off our show season for the year,” says Chad Brown, Braun Industries’ VP of Sales & Marketing. “We are particularly excited about this show because it will be our first under the new company after merging with Demers Ambulances. President of Braun, Kim Braun, will be joining us, as well as President of Demers and CEO of Demers & Braun, Alain Brunelle.  We’ll have some beautiful units on display with great features like the new MasterTech FleetConnect. We’ll also be educating visitors on what it means to be fully compliant with Change Notice 10. It will be a great opportunity for customers old and new to ask questions about ambulance safety, our products, and the benefits the merger will have for them.”

Braun Industries will have several representatives in attendance at the show. As mentioned above, President – Kim Braun will be there, along with Chad Brown – VP of Sales & Marketing. Braun’s Regional Sales Managers, Jason Adair, Jarret Hammons, and Jason Gerhardt, will also be in the booth. Members from Braun’s dealer network will include sales reps from Spartan Fire & Emergency Apparatus, Penn Care, Emergency Equipment Professionals, and First Priority Emergency Vehicles.

Inside Braun’s booth, visitors will find three new ambulances on display. The first unit is a Type III Chief XL Chevy G-4500 Gas from Broad Creek. As with all of Braun’s ambulances, this vehicle features Braun’s exclusive EZ Glide Door for enhanced on-scene safety and SolidBody Construction for a lighter, yet safer module. The EZ 02 Lift compartment offers a smaller footprint than traditional lifts and helps eliminate work safety hazards and back injuries associated with lighting heavy oxygen bottles. A Golight is mounted to the cab roof for on-scene illumination, and inside the module visitors will find a patient camera monitoring system and Norcold refrigerator.

The second ambulance on display will be a Type I Express Plus from Read Mountain Fire & Rescue in Roanoke County, Virginia. Built on a Ford F450 4×4, this unit features a LiquidSpring suspension for a smoother, safer ride. A Whelen TAL85 traffic advisor low profile light bar enhances visibility on the exterior of the unit. Inside, visitors will find a custom interior with a cabinet at the head of the squad bench, as well as glove holders at the rear doors.

The last unit on display will be a Type I Express Plus on a Ford F-450 4×4 chassis. This demo unit will feature the newest innovation from Braun, MasterTech FleetConnect. MasterTech FleetConnect is an ambulance specific connectivity platform designed to lengthen vehicle life, reduce unplanned downtime, and empower remote maintenance and troubleshooting of a vehicle in real-time. The demo also features Braun’s well-known innovations such as the EZ Glide Door, SolidBody Construction, and EZ 02 Lift. It features a LiquidSpring suspension as well.

To see any of these units on display, plan to visit Braun Industries in Booth #1315 at EMS Today: The JEMS Conference & Exposition. Exhibit hall hours are Wednesday, February 21st from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Thursday, February 22nd from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Friday February 23rd from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Those that cannot attend the conference in person should follow Braun Industries on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/BraunAmbulances/. The ambulance manufacturer will be posting from the show floor, allowing anyone to get a peek inside Booth #1315.

Type 1 Ambulance or Type 3 Ambulance: What is the Difference?

type 1 or type 3 ambulance (1).png

If you’re new to Fire/EMS or just looking to get a better understanding of the options offered by various ambulances manufacturers, one question you might have is “What’s the difference between a Type 1 and Type 3 ambulance?” Unlike many ambulance manufacturers that lead by type, we lead by model at Braun. So, there’s no quick way to look and see what is a Type 1 ambulance versus a Type 3 ambulance. The good news is, that allows for more flexibility as a customer. For example, you’re able to get our Chief XL and Signature Series models in either a Type 1 or Type 3 configuration. The distinction is made by the chassis you choose to build the ambulance on, which is often just as or more important to departments than what a model is called.

Take a Closer Look

Type 1 and Type 3 ambulances look similar upon first glance: they both feature a square patient compartment or ambulance module built separate from the chassis. When the box is completed, it’s mounted to the chassis to finish the build. The main difference between a Type 1 ambulance and a Type 3 ambulance is how the chassis used and how the box connects to the cab.

What is a Type 1 Ambulance?

Type 1 ambulances are mounted on a truck-style chassis. The driver compartment resembles a pickup truck. At Braun, Type 1 ambulances are available on F-series Fords, RAM, and Freightliner chassis. Type 1 ambulances include a passthrough that is smaller than that of Type 3 ambulances; it looks like a window that connects the driver and patient compartments.

An example of a Type 1 ambulance passthrough.

Braun offers the Express Plus, Signature Series, Liberty, Chief XL, and Super Chief models as Type 1 ambulances. The Express Plus, Signature Series, Liberty, and Chief XL models can be mounted on a Ford F-350, Ford F-450, or Ram 4500 chassis. The Super Chief model can be mounted on an International 4300 LP, Ford F-650, or Freightliner M2 chassis.

What is a Type 3 Ambulance?

Type 3 ambulances are mounted on a cut-a-way van chassis. Braun Type 3 ambulance chassis include E-Series Fords or G-Series Chevys. On Type 3 ambulances, the cab is an integral part of the ambulance unit. The passthrough can vary in appearance, but looks more like a doorway than a window. This allows for easier transfer of items from the patient compartment to the driver compartment and vice-versa.

Braun offers the Signature Series and Chief XL as Type 3 ambulances, which can be mounted on Ford E-350, Ford E-450, Chevy G3500, or G4500 chassis. The Express model is also one of our Type 3 ambulances, and it can be mounted on a Ford E-350 or Chevy G3500 chassis.

What do all Braun ambulances have in common?

Although our Type 1 and Type 3 ambulances are different, they’re both built with one common goal in mind: to keep the occupants, whether patient or paramedic, safe at all costs. Every Braun ambulance is built using our SolidBody™ Construction, a Braun exclusive that constructs the body from brake formed parts with fully welded seams. With no separate extruded frame, it reduces weight and adds strength, helping to absorb impact, minimize transferred damage, and provide added safety. Motown is a Braun Town: Detroit selected Braun as New Ambulance Manufacturer for 49 units

As an ambulance manufacturer, we’re always excited when we get a chance to work with a new department. Detroit Fire Department was no different! We will deliver 49 new ambulances to the city over the course of five years. In 2017, we delivered 14 new units. We will deliver 35 additional ambulances over the next four years: nine units in 2018, nine in 2019, nine in 2020, and eight in 2021. All units are/will be Chief XL ambulance models.

The Detroit Fire Department staffs over 1,000 firefighters that work out of 34 fire stations. They respond to over 165,000 calls annually. In a city as big as Detroit, it’s important to have durable units that can stand up to the high call volume of an urban environment. Deputy Fire Commissioner of Detroit, Dave Fornell, said that the department wanted their EMS crews to have units that were as durable as the fire department’s trucks. To make their decision, Fornell and his colleagues created a committee, weighed their options through various visits and demonstrations, and checked in with New Orleans EMS and Boston EMS (who have Braun units) to get information on maintenance and operations of their ambulances. The committee was most concerned with safety and durability, with a high return on investment. It was critically important the new ambulances last, to save the department money in the long run.

For Fornell, it was all about “understanding Detroit” when it came to picking a manufacturer and designing their units. Their Braun Chief XL ambulances are mounted on the tough Ford F-550 chassis. The module was laid out with Detroit’s first responders in mind. Each ambulance features customized interior console layouts, customized exterior compartment sizes, and customized interior cabinets. They also include Braun’s exclusive E-Z O2 lift oxygen cylinder lift and storage compartment, Havis docking stations and mounts for the console, and Ferno InX cots and mounts for patient transport and loading. The Deputy Commissioner said that Braun’s exclusive EZ Glide™ door is a huge safety advantage, plus the aluminum construction makes the unit significantly more durable than others.

So far, feedback on the delivered units has been great. One of Detroit’s EMTs posted to Facebook, saying “Nothing but respect and gratitude to whoever had a hand in making [these units] happen. Every detail is fantastic and well thought out with us, the medics who will spend countless hours in them, in mind. If I had a wish list of what I wanted in an ambulance, this rig has it all.”

Braun Ambulances’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Chad Brown, says “We at Braun are extremely excited and proud to deliver the city of Detroit their new Braun ambulances. […] We worked together with the city of Detroit to design and build a purpose-built ambulance for the paramedics and EMTs of Detroit. We look forward to continuing this great relationship for years to come!”

Ambulance Safety: Braun Ambulances are Fully Compliant with CN10

Nowadays, it seems like every ambulance manufacturer is leading with safety. And while that’s great for marketing, it’s important to have the testing and data to back up those claims. At Braun, we’ve had a long-standing commitment to safety, quality, and innovation, which has pushed us to achieve many industry firsts. We are proud to announce our ambulance models are fully compliant with Change Notice 10.

  • SAE Test J3057 – Ambulance Modular Body Evaluation
  • SAE Test J3058 – Ambulance Interior Storage Compartment Integrity
  • SAE Test J3102 – Ambulance Patient Compartment Structural Integrity

As ambulance safety standards evolve, we remain committed to their advancement and industry wide adoption. We will challenge ourselves and our competitors to improve by delivering the safest ambulance models on the road.

Why does this matter to you?

  • SAE J3057 – In the event of a crash, you want quick exit from the module. This test confirms you can safely exit the vehicle through any door. At Braun, we tested our module to the required 35,000 lbs and then retested it to the equipment limit of 150,000 lbs. We exceeded the requirements by nearly 500%. Occupant safety matters.
  • SAE J3058 – As you know, your rig holds a lot of supplies and equipment in the interior cabinetry. If it’s not properly secured with quality latches, hardware, and faces, the items inside can become projectiles. We have tested our cabinetry to CN10 requirements and confirmed everything will remain just where it should in the event of an accident.
  • SAE J3102 – On the interior of an ambulance, items are secured to the floor – the most important of these being the patient cot. We have tested the structure and integrity of our flooring to ensure SAE J3057 compliant litter retention systems stay securely mounted in the event of a crash.

Beards at Braun Ambulances – Ambulance Manufacturer Celebrates No-Shave November

No-Shave November has grown in popularity over the years to become a mainstream fundraiser. For those that don’t know what it is, it’s a unique awareness campaign focused on facial hair. While many cancer patients lose their hair, No-Shave November embraces hair growth by forgoing shaving and grooming. Money shaved off grooming – pun intended – is then donated to cancer prevention, research, and education programs.

At Braun Industries, employees were encouraged to participate in No-Shave November. They could donate what they’d normally spend in hair care and shaving costs for one month, or pledge another donation amount. They also sought out sponsors from family and friends to increase the donation total. Altogether, this incredible group of bearded bros donated $410 to the American Cancer Society. We are honored to have such giving individuals on our team! And, we’re ready to see their handsome faces again.

Braun Ambulances Honors 2017 EMT Of The Year

Each year, Braun Ambulances is honored to sponsor the NAEMT EMT of the Year Award, in conjunction with NAEMT and EMS World. This year, recipients of the 2017 National EMS Awards of Excellence were recognized on October 17 at NAEMT’s General Membership Meeting and on October 18 at EMS World Expo’s opening ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada.Braun Industries was honored to award the title of 2017 NAEMT EMT of the Year to Ryan Houser, an EMT from Morristown, New Jersey. Houser is a volunteer EMT and assistant captain for Morris Minute Men EMS and works to create videos to encourage volunteers and to educate his community. In addition, Houser is a certified firefighter, works on committees to educate and support juveniles, is an EMT for Cedar Knolls FD and Morris County OEM, an Emergency Technician for Morristown Medical Center, and attends Rutgers University full-time. Houser is also an instructor of terrorism response courses, which is important for the Morris Minute Men, as they dispatched two ambulances to New York City on 9/11. Houser works to prepare his colleagues and others for any situation that they might encounter.

Nominees for the NAEMT EMT of the Year Award should provide superior care to their patients in their homes and whilst being transported by ambulance, work to provide positive environments for their peers and patients alike, and be dedicated to continuing their education. Houser’s colleague, Kendall Sarson, praised Houser for his works, stating, “Ryan has truly modeled his entire life around helping others, whether patient or peer, and his work as an EMT has become one of the most significant parts of his identity.”

Braun Ambulances’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Chad Brown, was pleased to meet Houser, and said, “It is opportunities like this that remind me – and everyone at Braun Industries – of the important work our first responders do and our commitment to them to keep them safe while doing it.” Brown is proud to be part of Braun Ambulances’ work to provide EMTs like Ryan with safe and efficient ambulances to work out of. Houser, who is 21, hopes to work in federal law enforcement, become a neurosurgeon, and help advance the field of tactical medicine. Ryan Houser is an exemplary EMT of the year, and Braun Ambulances is pleased recognize his outstanding work.

Chevron Striping for Ambulance Safety

Chevron Striping: Ambulance safety is very important in today’s departments across the nation, the addition of chevron striping on the back of the ambulance module and door interiors helps to increase recognition of emergency vehicles.

Key Advantages of Chevron Striping:

  • Both visibility and recognition are important facets of emergency vehicle conspicuity.
  • The use of contrasting colors can assist drivers with locating a hazard amid the visual clutter of the roadway.
  • Fluorescent colors (especially fluorescent yellow-green and orange) offer higher visibility during daylight hours

Ohio Ambulance Manufacturer at EMS World Expo

This week, we’re off to Las Vegas, Nevada for EMS World Expo 2017. The event started on Monday, but will run with October 20th; the exhibition hall opens on Wednesday. Hosted by EMS World magazine in partnership with NAEMT, the event is expected to attract more than 5,500 attendees and 360 exhibitors from over 44 countries. It is advertised as the largest EMS event in North America and will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. We will be there in Booth #1833, with 3 ambulances on display.

EMS World Expo is a conference and exhibition event. Drawing on world-class faculty and industry thought-leaders, educational sessions will cover a wide range of techniques and trends in out-of-hospital care. There will be 175+ CEU-certified sessions across 8 topic tracks. In addition, hands-on learning opportunities include agency ride-alongs, trauma center tours, a cadaver lab, a simulation lab, and more. There will also be free education provided in the Exhibit Hall Learning Center.

Regional Sales Manager Jason Adair will be in attendance from Braun direct, along with Chad Brown, VP of Sales & Marketing. Several representatives from our national ambulance dealer network will be there as well. This includes Tracie Richards, Dennis Watters, and Jim Renner from Hughes Fire, Justin Jarvis from Pinnacle Emergency Vehicles, and Tim Hutchens from Lone Star Emergency Vehicles. We will all be in Booth #1833.

This show is especially exciting for us since we will be debuting MasterTech V Fleet Connect, a new electronic complement developed in collaboration with Weldon. This innovation will enable the first “smart” ambulance, sending and receiving information from the ambulance to home base. It will provide remote chassis and electrical diagnostics, allow for remote reprogramming, maintain a service of history issues, offer vehicle and asset tracking, suggest driver behavior modifications, listen for voice activation commands, and more. It will allow departments to keep a better eye on their fleet and maintain their vehicles more easily.

Aside from the MasterTech V Fleet Connect debut, we will have 3 ambulances on display. The first will be a Braun Chief XL from the University of Missouri. Built on a Ford 450 4×4, the module features a door forward design and 74” of headroom. The vehicle includes Liquid Spring suspension, Lumalier ultraviolet light, backboard storage at the rear of the module, Zoll AutoPulse storage, and no curbside compartment. To enhance the working area, there’s a custom work center that features an EVS Jumpseat with Mobility 1 Tracking System curbside.

The City of Kennewick is allowing us to display their new Chief XL model. Built on a Ford 450 4×4 with Liquid Spring suspension, this module includes a street side window – a unique feature not often seen. It also has an EZ 02 Lift, low profile rooftop AC, rear mounted shorelines, and SCBA storage.

We will also have a new Signatures Series demo ambulance on a Ford F-350 4×4. This unit will feature the MasterTech V Fleet Connect electronic component. It also includes an EZ 02 Lift.

To see any of these units on display, plan to visit us in Booth #1833 at EMS World Expo 2017. Exhibit Hall hours are Wednesday, October 18th from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm, Thursday October 19th from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm, and Friday, October 20th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Those that cannot attend the conference in person should follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/BraunAmbulances/. We will be hosting Facebook Live sessions from the show floor, allowing anyone to get a peek inside our booth!
