Braun to Display New EZ Door Forward at FDIC 2012

Chief XL with EZ Door Forward

Over the years, one of the biggest factors that has set us apart as an ambulance manufacturer has been the introduction of signature innovations, such as our SolidBody ConstructionEZ Glide Door,  and MasterTech Electrical System. This year at FDIC, we will be proudly unveil a new ambulance design configuration called the EZ Door Forward. Make sure to stop by Booth #4731 to check it out!

We are always looking at new ways to build a safer ambulance module, while simultaneously creating more work room and storage within the box. The EZ Door Forward is a significant design change whereby we’ve incorporated the EZ Glide Sliding Door to a forward location to allow for more interior cabinet space and customization. By incorporating the sliding door into this design configuration, it promotes safe entry and exit into the ambulance module and protects crew members from accidentally opening the door into traffic while on-scene. Additionally, it improves the interior layout for patient care by positioning the essential life care equipment within easy reach from the 5-point seating locations.

At FDIC 2012, the EZ Door Forward will be displayed on a Chief XL Type III ambulance on a Chevy G-4500 chassis. This is a 169″ module with 72″ headroom. Aside from the new door, this ambulance cabinetry has a safety design to remove any hard edges with angled upper cabinets providing a StayAway Zone and rounded corners for lower body protection. Other features include the Whelen LED Series Lighting Package, Rollup Door, EVS 5-Point Harness CPR Seat, easy access equipment drawers, and all aluminum cabinets.

This unit will be coming out of production just before FDIC 2012, so if you stop by Booth #4731 you will be one of the first to see this new design layout. We hope to see you there!

Chad Brown on Fire Engineering Talk Radio

Braun Industries’ Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Chad Brown, was recently interviewed on Fire Engineering Talk Radio. Host Chric McLoone, Associate Editor of Fire Apparatus and Emergency Equipment magazine, covers a variety of questions with Chad specifically related to the Patriot ambulance model. You can listen to the complete episode here. Chad’s interview begins around minute marker 47 and is 15 minutes long.

Want a quick recap of the interview? Check out the highlights below.

The History of the Patriot Model: The idea of the Patriot unit has evolved over time. It started in 2008 when Braun placed a Super Chief ambulance on a Spartan Furion chassis. As Braun brought the vehicle around to different trade shows, there was a lot of interest and questions around whether or not they could put fire suppression capabilities on it, along with other rescue and extrication tools. This prompted Braun’s innovation and development team to look into what was possible and how they could develop a vehicle to meet these requests. What they came up with is today’s Patriot. It’s a versatile apparatus built for fire-based EMS departments on a purpose-built chassis.

Overview of the Custom Patriot Units for Volusia County: Chad started working with Volusia County over a year and a half ago. They custom designed and built 4 Patriot models; details on the units can be found here. They are going to put these units into service at outlying stations that serve rural areas. These stations previously had long response times because a 3rd party EMS transport company was providing their EMS service. In the tough economic times when they’re forced to do more with less, these will allow Volusia County to provide fire suppression, extrication, and transport capability in one vehicle, with limited manpower.

Additional topics discussed in the interview, related to the points above:

  • Transition for Braun to selling fire apparatus
  • Interest level for these types of all-in-one units
  • Why Braun built this type of unit
  • Target market for these units
  • Ability to build these for a 4 person crew
  • Unique orders that stand out to Braun
  • Standards these apparatus meet to be compliant
  • General comments about these all-in-one emergency vehicles

Thanks to Chris McLoone for a great interview!

If you are interested in seeing the Patriot unit discussed in the interview, be sure to visit Braun Ambulances at FDIC. There will be a unit from Volusia County on display at our main booth, #4731. Exhibits will open on April 19, 2012.

Looking Back as Braun Ambulances Celebrates 40 Years of Ambulance Manufacturing

Important things first… remember to enter our 40th Anniversary Contest! We want you to send us a picture of your Braun ambulance and tell us why you love it in our “Why I Love My Braun” photo contest. The grand prize winner will receive a Motorola XOOM Android tablet! We’ve extended the contest deadline to August 1, 2012, but we encourage you to enter early so you don’t forget.

Also in honor of our 40 years as an ambulance manufacturer, we’re taking a look back at Braun Industries over the years. While our ambulances have been involved in many important emergency response efforts, the attacks on September 11, 2001 stands out as one of the most memorable.

Braun ambulance customer, Long Island College Hospital (LICH), deployed five ambulances to the disaster site in New York City immediately following the attacks. By the end of the day, only two of the LICH ambulances made it back to their station intact. The other three units were severely damaged. One had a large dent on the passenger-side cab. Another barely made it back before its motor seized. The last remained at the World Trade Center site, crushed by tons of debris.

The ambulance destroyed at the city of the World Trade Center collapse was a Braun ambulance. “Although the unit was destroyed when the South Tower came crumbling down, the box of the ambulance remained amazingly intact,” said LICH Director Ed Caballero. “If anyone needed to seek shelter in that box at the time of the collapse, they would have been able to survive due to the integrity of the Braun design.”

After the event, three of the surviving ambulances were thoroughly cleaned, repaired, and placed back into service. Long Island College Hospital replaced the two fallen vehicles with new Braun ambulances. The new units purchased were 147″ Type III Braun Raider ambulances mounted on 2002 Ford E450 chassis.

Featured Braun Ambulance Dealer: Ten-8 Fire Equipment

Ten-8 Fire Equipment

Continuing our series highlighting Braun ambulance dealers, today we’re featuring Ten-8 Fire Equipment. Ten-8 Fire Equipment serves the states of Florida and Georgia. They are also a Braun authorized service center.

Ten-8 Fire Equipment has its beginnings in the early 1970s as Don Bouwer Fire & Safety Equipment. In 1985, as the company grew and established partnerships with major suppliers of emergency equipment, the company was incorporated under the name Ten-8 Fire Equipment, Inc. The name comes from the standard code system that police, fire and emergency personnel use for radio communication. The code “10-8” means “in service.” Ten-8’s company motto is: “In Service To Serve You.”

Ten-8 has sales and service centers in Forsyth, Georgia; Sanford, Florida; DeFuniak Springs, Florida; Pompano Beach, Florida; and Bradenton, Florida which serves as the corporate headquarters. The service centers are equipped with paint booths, pump testing facilities, and fabrication machinery. They are staffed with in-house, certified EVT technicians. They also offer mobile service options throughout their territory to perform repairs and preventative maintenance on-location.

The company represents many major manufacturers of fire and emergency apparatus and equipment. They have been a Braun ambulance dealer for roughly a year and a half. The following sales team members represent the Braun brand in their respective regions: Guy Binion – Western and Northern Georgia, Jeff Amlong – Eastern Georgia, Bob Ivey – Northern Florida, Cindy Morgan – Central & Southern Florida.

Ten-8 Fire Equipment was attracted to the Braun Industries line of ambulance models primarily for their high quality construction techniques and comprehensive warranty program. “The level of detail Braun gets into during the design and engineering of each vehicle is very impressive,” says Cindy Morgan, VP of Equipment & Rescue Sales at Ten-8 Fire Equipment. They also appreciated that Braun was a family-run, privately-owned company.

Ten-8 Fire Equipment is the dealer responsible for working with Braun Industries and Volusia County Fire Services to design and build four custom Patriot units. These units were recently on display at the Fire-Rescue East Trade Show in Daytona Beach, FL, where they were well received with lots of interest. The custom Patriot units are an all-in-one ambulance, rescue vehicle, and fire truck. They are comprised of a 2011 Patriot Module, a 2011 Spartan MetroStar Chassis, and a Waterous CAFSystem (compressed air foam system). Visit our site for more information on these units, as well as a video tour.

Chad Brown, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, has the following to say about the new Phil Braun Signature Series model: “With the celebration of our 40th anniversary in the ambulance industry, we wanted to pay homage to our past. Braun Promotes New Sales Engineer

It’s an exciting time at Braun Industries. We are celebrating our 40th anniversary, releasing a new model, and much more. We are also pleased to be recognizing some awesome individuals within the Braun family by promoting them to new positions. Today, we congratulate Travis Parsons on his new position as Sales Engineer.

Travis has been with Braun Industries for a little over 6 years. During his time with us, he has held several positions, each time working his way up the ladder with increased knowledge and leadership skills. He has been an Interior Prep Operator, Chassis Prep Operator, Interior Prep Team Leader, Final Assembly Coordinator, and Chassis Prep Coordinator. His current position as Sales Engineer is a critical one.

As Sales Engineer, it is Travis’ primary job responsibility to review the orders as they come in to make sure they are complete. This is particularly important since every Braun ambulance is custom handcrafted. It is imperative to have all the information on the order form accurate to move it smoothly through the different areas of assembly, without any questions from the Design Engineer on the floor.

With Travis’ previous experience on our production floor, he has a substantial amount of insight on Braun’s ambulance models. He has first-hand experience on how they come together and he’s able to articulate that to dealers and customers as questions arise. This knowledge is also helpful in the order review process since he clearly understands all the bits and pieces of our various ambulance models and is able to identify when something may not be right or has been left out on an order.

Travis enjoys working at Braun industries because he gets to come to work every day and do something that he likes to do. He takes pride in knowing that what he does makes a big impact on so many people who trust in the reliability and safety of their Braun ambulance. Braun’s commitment to building a quality vehicle and always looking at better ways to make their ambulances safer pushes Travis to do his best. It’s important to get things right when each ambulance is custom built to what the customer needs and what will suit them best in the field.

Congratulations again on your promotion Travis! We’re proud to have you as a Braun family member.

NFPA 1917: The New Standard in Ambulance Specifications

NFPA 1917 Ambulance Specifications 2013 Edition

We recently posted a survey on our Facebook page related to the NFPA 1917 – the new standard for automotive ambulances by the National Fire Protection Association. Based on the initial results, we felt it was beneficial to spend some time on our blog explaining more about NFPA 1917. Additionally, we want to you to participate in our survey… if you haven’t done so already.

NFPA 1917 is a document set to define new safety requirements for ambulances and essentially replace the KKK standard which has been used in the past. The KKK became the purchasing standard in the 1970s for organizations using federal block grants to pay for their rescue vehicles. At that time, it was used as a minimum standard for safety specifications and adopted by many states to allow for grant compliance.

In 2008, the federal government’s General Services Administration announced it would no longer maintain the KKK. The administration looked to the National Fire Protection Association to develop a new set of specifications; the organization has a history of developing standards that are voluntarily adopted by manufacturers, etc. The goal was/is to develop a new set of guidelines that will serve as an industry standard.

The group overseeing the development of the new standards is the AAA Technical Committee. It is comprised of individuals with a wide range of interests, including ambulance manufacturers, insurance providers, regulators, end-users, and more. Initially convening in June 2009, the last 2 years have produced several versions of the document from the committee; each time, published and available for public comment and sent back to the committee for review and revisions. The goal of the Technical Committee is to have the final standards published in June 2012.

So what does NFPA 1917 mean to your EMS organization? On the plus side, a safer rescue vehicle. On the down side, a more costly rescue vehicle.  There are hundreds of items in the document that will affect ambulance specifications. The way we build our ambulances will be different. Always at the forefront of innovation and safety, we’re uniquely positioned at Braun Industries to be ahead of the curve. In fact, we’ve adopted the plans outlined in the current version of NFPA 1917 for all of our 2013 models. However, there are still many unknowns at this time – the requirements for testing vehicles being one of those, which should be straightened out in 2015 under the next revision.

As an ambulance manufacturer staying abreast of the latest updates on NFPA 1917, we have a few recommendations for EMS organizations needing to purchase a rescue vehicle now or in the near future.  If you want to purchase a new emergency vehicle, we recommend you do it before January 1, 2013. That means you should be conducting your research now and reaching out to ambulance manufacturers and local dealers. Since a vehicle ordered before January 2013 will not be required to meet the new standards, this is an advantage to those wisely planning ahead. We are estimating an additional cost of $9-11K per ambulance once the new standard is put in place, so this can amount to significant savings for EMS organizations. While this is an increase up front, it’s also important to remember that keeping an old and under-performing rescue vehicle in service longer than it should be also has its hidden costs. The best thing to do is plan ahead and purchase a new ambulance now.

As new information is released, we will be keeping our blog up to date. We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFPA 1917. Please leave a comment below.

Braun Ambulances at AAA Show 2011

Last week we gave you a teaser on where you could spot a Braun Ambulance during the month of November. Today, we want to cover the American Ambulance Association Annual Convention and Tradeshow 2011. Why? As an ambulance manufacturer, it’s one of our favorite events to attend! Last year was our first time back in over 15 years and we had a great time.

The American Ambulance Association Annual Convention and Tradeshow is a unique one for us. Aimed at private services, the event gives us an opportunity to speak one-on-one with business principals and owners. This is quite different than a show like FDIC, as it gives us a chance to learn about what private services want and need from their emergency vehicles. For profit and non-profit EMS services alike were able to provide us valuable feedback last year by engaging in high level discussions with our sales representatives.

We have two ambulance models that private EMS services especially love due to the high quality of a custom handcrafted ambulance at an affordable price. Those are the Braun Express ambulance and the Braun Liberty ambulance. We will have both of these ambulance models on display. If you’re attending, stop by booth numbers 10 and 11 to see them!

The American Ambulance Association Annual Convention and Tradeshow 2011 will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton. The show lasts from November 14th to November 16th and the keynote speaker is Erin Brokovich. On hand will be Chad Brown, Executive Sales Manager for Braun Industries. Additionally, representatives from Braun’s ambulance dealer network will be in attendance including All Area Fire & Rescue (Nassau Fire Apparatus)North Eastern Rescue Vehicles, and Penn Care.

Are you planning to attend the AAA Convention and Tradeshow 2011? If so, what are you most looking forward to?

FireGuard, Inc. Celebrates 15 Years

Congratulations to FireGuard, Inc. on 15 fabulous years!

FireGuard, Inc. is the exclusive Braun ambulance dealer for Nebraska and counties in Iowa. They are also a Braun Authorized Service Center. Established in 1996, 2011 marked their 15 year anniversary. Kim Braun and Chad Brown of Braun Industries, Inc. recently traveled out to Omaha to celebrate with them.

On October 12, 2011, FireGuard held their 15th Annual Customer Appreciation Open House from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. It was a great opportunity for FireGuard’s customers and vendors to come out for food, fun, and a chance to network with other EMS professionals. Several of Braun’s ambulances were on display at the event. Images can be found on FireGuard’s Facebook page here.

While at the event, Kim and Chad were able to meet face to face with several Braun customers. These included Omaha Fire, Lincoln Fire, Elkhorn Fire, Gretna Rescue, Bellvue Fire, Millard Fire, Ralston Fire, Lewis Fire, and Southwest Fire Protection District. It is always nice to catch up with customers in person and hear what their experiences have been like working with Braun. Both Kim and Chad want to extend a special thank you to Bob Sorensen, dealer principal, Eric Koeppe, VP and General Manager, and Kevin Hergott, sales representative from FireGuard, for their hospitality. It was a wonderful experience to be part of such a celebratory event!
