Emergency Vehicle Spotlight: The MIT Ambulance

Every custom ambulance project we take on at Braun is a unique experience. However, our recent delivery to the student-led MIT Emergency Medical Services team was an awesome undertaking. The result is what MIT-EMS Technical Director Mark Forgues calls “the single most comfortable vehicle I have ever ridden in the back of.” It was a pleasure working with MIT students to see their vision become a reality.

Plans for the new ambulance began in 2011, when the team identified obvious shortcomings in their previous ambulance built in 2003. Inhibited by outdated technology and limited maneuverability in the box to provide adequate patient care, the students started dreaming up their next-generation ambulance. The planning process included on-site visits to other ambulances in service, teleconferences with leading international safety experts, and even a space dedicated to the physical layout of the new ambulance – replicating the module dimensions and subbing in boxes for seats, stretchers, and cabinets. Safety was the primary focus of the design, honing in on five-point harnesses, swivel seats, and ergonomic storage locations for equipment and supplies.

After six months and countless rejections by major ambulance manufacturers, Braun Industries accepted the challenge of building the MIT ambulance. Featuring unusual dimensions and countless customizations, the Braun Chief XL was chosen as the model best matched to MIT’s blueprints. The unit had an eight month build time.

Notable features of the MIT ambulance include:

  • Lack of “strike zones” designed to eliminate protrusions and protect EMS crew from hitting their head while working. This includes embedded video displays and eye-level drawers with magnetic seals instead of traditional cabinetry.
  • LED panels in place of dome lights.
  • GPS unit and side and reverse cameras for enhanced navigation.
  • Exterior equipment and supply storage space.

The unique design of the unit helped recognize MIT-EMS with an Innovation of the Year Award by the Metropolitan Boston Emergency Medical Services Council. It also serves to commemorate Sean Collier, the MIT police officer killed in the line of duty last April in relation to the Boston Marathon Bombings. The vehicle bears license plate number 179, Collier’s badge number.  A custom graphic on the side of the ambulance also celebrates his memory.

It was an honor to work with such innovator thinkers as the students and team at MIT-EMS. We are proud to see a Braun ambulance bring their dream to life!

New Ambulance Sales Representative for Southwest

We are excited to announce we are expanding our sales territory in the Southwest. Braun Industries has hired Jerry Jones as a Factory Direct Sales Representative. Jerry will cover Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and Southern California.

Jerry has extensive experience in the EMS industry on the sales side, as well as having participated in the buying process of an emergency vehicle. He was a police officer for 25 years, a fire fighter for 10 years, and a fleet manager for some time. Jerry also served as a Utah Air National Guard Fire Fighter.

In Jerry’s personal time, he enjoys fly fishing. He is also interested in light houses. He is married and has two daughters and two grandchildren. His formal education includes a BS in Political Science.

Jerry is happy to join the Braun family, noting that Braun employees are very friendly and caring. They’ve made him feel welcome since he came aboard on November 18, 2013. Our strong commitment to customer care and our high quality product made it an easy decision for him to accept a position with us, and we are looking forward to seeing what he does in the Southwest as he takes on the challenge of selling Braun ambulances direct.

Braun VP of Sales & Marketing, Chad Brown, has the following to say about the new hire:

“I am very excited to announce the hiring of Jerry to the Braun Sales Team. With Jerry’s background in fire apparatus sales, and his unique background as the fleet manager of Unified Fire Authority, he brings things to the table from both sides of the business – the buying and selling side. We feel he will be a great asset to Braun, and our customers in the Southwest!”

If you’d like to contact Jerry directly, you can reach him on his cell phone at 801-674-7082. You can also email him at JerryJ@BraunAmbulances.com.

2013 Service Technician Training Wrap Up

Each year, we hold our Service Technician Training course in conjunction with some of our vendors. This year, it was held October 22 – 24, 2013. The first two days were classroom sessions held off-site in Van Wert, Ohio, while the third was conducted at our corporate headquarters/manufacturing plant.

We were honored to have 28 technicians attend the course. Present was a mix of dealership technicians and fleet maintenance technicians from various EMS providers. The great states of Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Mississippi, Michigan, Tennessee, and Utah were represented, making this an educational opportunity with far reach.

As usual, our vendors stepped up to join us and provided some invaluable training sessions. Presentations were given by the following vendor representatives:

  • Weldon – Marcus Kelley
  • PPG – Kent Erickson
  • Whelen – Paul Deming
  • Progressive Dynamics – Barry Lemmons
  • Vanner – Doug Dean and Jeff Carey
  • Kelderman Air Ride Suspension represented by Hadley and Utility Body Works – Daniel Nowicki, Tom Cox, and Daryl Palma
  • Hoseline – Greg Weber, Matt Grafton, Chris Miller

In addition to our vendor sessions, our internal Service Department offered education of their own. Topics covered were EZ Glide door maintenance and roller replacement, OS door maintenance and latch and rod adjustment, and general periodic maintenance skills.

Hands-on experience is one of the most valuable learning tools offered in our course. We had a session on electrical troubleshooting where we created electrical issues on 3 trucks and presented them to the students as a service order/customer complaint. Attendees were separated into smaller groups and assigned a truck to work on. They then went through the troubleshooting and repair process from start to finish for the 6 separate electrical issues we fabricated.

HVAC maintenance is critical for patient and crew comfort, and was also an important topic covered. Focused on identifying an issue and properly fixing it, we hooked up gauges to a completed emergency vehicle. As a group, we discussed high and low side pressures and what they mean from a troubleshooting standpoint.

Lastly, we used our time in the plant to conduct a four hour line tour. This was a detailed look at how Braun ambulances are built, with the unique opportunity for service technicians to interact directly with plant workers as the units are being manufactured. Split into small groups of no more than 5, we encouraged attendees to ask questions, talk to the operators on the production line, and get inside the units to see exactly how they were being put together.

The course was well received by attendees and vendors. In fact, we already having vendors requesting a slot to participate in next year’s course! Mark your calendars now for October 21-23, 2014 if you plan to attend. We’d love to have you!

Thank you to everyone who participated in making this years’ Service Technician Training Course a success!
