Ambulance Upfit for the American Red Cross

Braun Industries is deeply involved in our community, and we always enjoy partnering with other local organizations that are making a difference. We were recently honored to work with the West Central Chapter of the American Red Cross in Van Wert County. Working entirely from private donations, the Red Cross purchased a used Braun Ambulance. Remaining project funds were then spent to upfit the module to create to two separate service areas for clients and firemen, and address other needs particular to Red Cross’ outreach efforts.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross in Van Wert County is very unique in the way it provides services. As part of their outreach, they support local fire fighters on scene with an ERV – (emergency response vehicle). Dispatched for support, this unit goes to roughly 21 house fires each year, with an average on scene time of 4.5 hours. From the ERV, the Red Cross conducts casework with victims/clients to provide them assistance. It also serves as a convenient place for fire chiefs to locate families on scene, which is a critical time saver. Once the clients leave the scene, fire fighters use the module interior for rehab, offering them an air conditioned place to cool down in the summer and a nice toasty space to warm up in the winter. The old unit, a 1991 Slope Side Braun, will be taken out of service, but will continue to serve within the Emergency Management Department of Van Wert County.

The “new” ERV was a collaborative effort between the Red Cross and an experienced team of ambulance remount and refurbishment professionals in the Service. Many of the updates made were a direct result of past interactions with clients and the local fire departments and a desire to improve on them. The module interior was modified to create a private, comfortable area for clients and their caseworker to review their immediate needs and provide services. In addition, there is a writing surface for document preparation, glove warmer area for firemen, cup holders at the back of the bench area for drink storage, and a TV with DVD player. In particular, the glove warmer is a welcome addition. In past winter months, firefighters’ gloves would freeze. They can now heat their gloves during rehab periods.

The new emergency response vehicle will take a minimum of four people to operate. In the back of the module, there is a canteen area to serve drinks and hot/cold foods. All food and drinks are donated by local businesses and in the past were served out of the interior of the module. The new, customized built-in backs up to the module doors on the new and improved ERV. When the doors are open, Red Cross volunteers can serve directly from the exterior of the ambulance which will not interrupt client/caseworker interviews. This will be a significant improvement for the Red Cross. In the past, this process could take 1.5 hours due to interruptions; the new layout is expected to reduce interview time by approximately 45 minutes. A TV/DVD combination in the vehicle should also aid in client interviews. Included with children in mind, the entertainment feature should keep them occupied while the caseworker completes interviews with parents and sets up needed services.

“Braun Industries worked hard to understand the needs for the options to help us service the community better,” says Mark Klausing, Disaster Chairman for Van Wert County. “They made helpful suggestions and then took the ball and ran with it.”

“It was enjoyable to work with the Red Cross on the modification on their new ERV unit,” states Jim Lee, Braun Industries Service Specialist managing this project. “It was a challenge to take their ideas and come up with a plan to make it reality. Since we have worked with so many different ambulance services over the years, we have a large information database that we draw from for these types of projects.”

It was our pleasure to work with the Van Wert County chapter of the American Red Cross. We really enjoyed customizing the ambulance to meet their specific needs. We hope it is a welcome addition to the exceptional outreach services they already provide.

Braun Industries Recognized with Several Regional Awards

Braun Industries is a company largely defined by its location and the employees that call it home. In recent months, we have been nominated or awarded with several regional awards that we are proud to share. Van Wert, Ohio has been a great city to work in and in cooperation with, and we look forward to helping improve the community and enhancing the lives of its residents for many years to come.

In late September 2014, President of Braun Industries, Kim Braun, made her way to the stage at the 10th Annual Van Wert City Economic Development Dinner and Awards. Kim was there to accept the Large Enterprise of the Year Award, and was able to reflect on what the area has meant to her family’s business over the years.

““It feels really good to be appreciated by your community. I think it takes two partners in any relationship, and we were in the shoes 15 years ago of trying to decide where we were going to go and how we were going to do things, and this community came together as one and presented us with not just an opportunity with incentives, but more importantly an opportunity with a workforce and a culture where we wanted to grow our business in, and we’re absolutely thrilled to be a part of this city, and continue to keep growing,” Kim said.

She also had an opportunity to document her thoughts as part of a promotional film for WhyVanWert.org. You can check it out below.

Late last year, Braun Industries was also honored at the 2014 Salute to Small Business Awards Luncheon. Fifty-five companies were nominated, and thirty-two competed in seven different categories. Braun Industries received the 2014 Manufacturing Excellence Award. This was given for demonstrating sound business practices and leadership within the manufacturing industry based on economic impact, excellence, and support for community-oriented projects. The award was co-sponsored by the Van Wert Area Chamber of Commerce, Times Bulletin Media, and Citizens National Bank.

Braun-Manufacturing-Excellence-14

“Winning the Manufacturing Excellence Award is a tribute to the hard working, innovative employees at Braun Industries that design, support and manufacturer our emergency vehicles.  Their commitment to excellence and customer focus is what Braun is all about.  The Braun Ambulances are truly ‘Built for Life’,” says Gary Kohl’s.Gary is Braun Industries’ Vice President of Manufacturing, he was on hand to accept the award on November 14, 2014.

In late summer 2014, we were able to expand our campus with the opening of the new Braun Industries’ Service Facility. This expansion qualified us for the Van Wert Area Chamber of Commerce Golden Shovel Award. The award is given out to chamber members who have undergone an addition, expansion, or new construction project, and also display a commitment to the community through continuous improvements in the facility and services they provide.  Our new Service Facility is 49,500 square feet. Featuring multiple service bays, 2 paint booths, a sanding room, vehicle lifts, metal fabrication equipment, an electrical workshop, and a stock room area, the new location has allowed us to significantly increase our service offerings. Most notably, we now provide factory direct ambulance remounts and refurbishments. We received the Golden Shovel Award at the 93rd Annual Dinner & Awards Ceremony on February 9, 2015.

We were also honored to receive a nomination for the Chamber’s Crystal Image award. This award recognizes chamber members that have demonstrated leadership within the Van Wert community through business responsibility, productivity strength, employee empowerment, and service to the community. We are very committed to serving the residents of Van Wert and the surrounding areas. We are involved in such activities as the VWHS Project Lead the Way program by providing scholarships and internships, as well as the Van Wert Middle School and High School renaissance program. We have provided financial donations to the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio, the Van Wert County Hospital ER expansion project, the Business Development Corporation, and the Van Wert Rotary Scholarship Program. Braun is also committed to the community through its involvement with the United Way, D.A.R.E., the Van Wert Parks Department, Junior Achievement, Toys-for-Tots, Junior Fair Board and Junior Livestock Auction, 4th of July Fireworks, and various cancer awareness initiatives.

We appreciate the support of the community and the recognition from various organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce. We truly enjoy being part of Van Wert, and are pleased to see we are making a difference!

Braun to Sponsor NAEMT EMS on the Hill Day

Braun Industries is proud to be the Principal Sponsor for EMS on the Hill Day 2015. This year, the event will be held April 29, 2015 with a briefing on April 28, 2015. The event is hosted by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). It is a great opportunity for EMS professionals from around the country to come together and help educate members of Congress about the unique challenges they face and provide recommendations on improving our first response system.

The registration deadline is April 10, 2015: Register Now >>

EMS on the Hill Day attendees will be able to represent their state and the EMS profession in Washington D.C. as they help to advocate for key legislation.NAEMT is currently in the process of re-introducing theField EMS Quality, Innovation and Cost Effectiveness Improvement Act. Known as the “Field EMS Bill” for short, this piece of legislation is the highest priority at NAEMT. Originally introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2011, the bill mainly seeks to address the absence of a federal funding stream for Field EMS.

The lack of state and federal funding for EMS is one of the key challenges faced in delivering quality care to patients. As such, this bill outlines several ways to address that without adding to the federal deficit.

The Field EMS Bill will:

  • Recognize the Department of Health & Human Services as a primary federal agency for EMS and trauma care;
  • Enhance and focus federal support toward quality, innovation and cost-effectiveness;
  • Improve quality and accountability by promoting physician-led guidelines for medical oversight and direction and evaluating medical liability and reimbursement issues;
  • Test innovative delivery models, including alternative dispositions of patients not requiring transport to a hospital;
  • Enhance research in Field EMS;
  • Establish an Emergency Medical services Trust Fund to be funded by voluntary contributions made by taxpayers.

On April 28, 2015, those attending EMS on the Hill Day will partake in a briefing to help them prepare for their time on Capitol Hill. They will be given an appointment schedule and issue discussion points. Common concerns are lack of direct funding, certification/licensure issues, education/training, and pay. After the briefing, there will be a networking reception. The Mobile Integrated Healthcare Summit is also going on in DC on the 28th. EMS on the Hill Day will be the next day.

NAEMT corporate partner logo

Braun Industries is pleased to continue to support this wonderful event. As with years past, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Chad Brown will be attending. “We encourage EMS professionals and other companies in the EMS Industry to join NAEMT as they seek to change Field EMS for the better. We must all work together to make a difference! We are so proud to be able to support NAEMT in this endeavor and look forward to working together for the greater good,” says Chad. Eric Wilcox, Braun Regional Sales Manager, will also be attending.

If you cannot attend EMS Hill Day in person, please consider contacting your congressional leaders by phone, email, or traditional mail!  Hotel and transportation information can be found on NAEMT’s website, along with other details. You can also stay on top of the latest news by following #EMSontheHill on Twitter or Facebook.

Braun Ambulances Brings on New Sales Team Members

As demand increases and our sales territory expands, we are making significant investments to grow our infrastructure. One such investment is in people. Our Human Resources Department has been working hard to hire the best people, and we are excited to see the Braun family grow.

Recently, we have made some changes to our Sales Support team to directly benefit our dealers and end-customers. Shantell Brown has joined us to provide administrative sales support. Leslie Klopfenstein has also been hired for inside sales support. Both women have been a great addition to the sales team, and we are excited to hear more from them!

Our most recent hire, starting on December 15, 2014, Leslie Klopfenstein has previous work experience in claims adjustments, administrative support, and logistics. She brings a unique set of skills to the position, as well as an understanding of the Fire & EMS Industry. Her husband is a fire chief and EMT, as well as a 911 dispatcher for a local sheriff’s office.

Providing Inside Sales Support, Leslie works with our three regional sales managers, dealers, and customers. During her brief time with us, she has enjoyed meeting new people and acquiring new skills and abilities. When asked why she wanted to work at Braun, Leslie says, “Working with the sales group of an industry leader such as Braun Industries is exciting and challenging. Both the product and the company reputation is something I am proud to represent.” When she’s not working, Leslie enjoys reading, cooking, and learning new languages; she speaks French fluently.

Shantell Brown joined Braun in August 2014, looking for a challenging position in a new industry. As Sales Support Specialist, she provides assistance to our regional sales managers with change orders, purchase agreements, and order review. She also handles tradeshow coordination, acts as a contact for buying programs, helps develop and manage Braun’s marketing plans, and maintains inventory for our merchandise.

One of the most important and rewarding tasks of Shantell’s new position is working with dealers and end-customers to schedule deliveries. “I love working directly with customers,” Shantell says. “See how happy they are when they leave the Braun plant with their new emergency vehicle is so exciting. Ultimately, we are part of a group that’s helping to save lives, and that’s very special.” When she’s not working, Shantell enjoys spending time with her children and decorating cakes.

We want to extend a sincere “Welcome” to these two women, who have already made their mark as a critical asset to our Sales and Marketing Department.

Braun Delivers New Emergency Vehicle to Rio Arriba County

While we have many units leaving our production plant each month, we love any opportunity to provide our readers with additional information on a delivery. We highlight trucks we think are unique or have new and innovative features worth sharing about. Today, we’d like to spotlight the new Braun G4500 Chief XL ambulance that went to Rio Arriba County.

Rio Arriba County is located in New Mexico. The department provides fire, EMS, swift water rescue, hazmat, and 911 services for their area. Covering over 5800 square miles, Rio Arriba is the second largest county in New Mexico. With five Braun ambulances in their seven unit fleet, the department responds to over 2500 calls per year.

Mateo DeVargas, Emergency Manager/EMS Coordinator for Rio Arriba County, worked with Tim Hutchens, owner of Lone Star Emergency Vehicles, to design the new Braun G4500 Chief XL. The interior features a custom triangle of care, an ergonomic design aimed to enhance patient care in the emergency vehicle. The safety interior also makes it a better working environment for EMS providers. The module includes three individual paramedic seats with five-point harnesses to keep providers safely belted in as they work.

When asked why they purchased a Braun Chief XL, Mateo DeVargas said: “We feel that Braun’s construction and reliability is unparalleled in the industry.” Their new unit was produced using Braun’s exclusive SolidBody™ Construction, a unique process where the box is built as one integrated module from .125”flat-sheet, marine grade aluminum.  With no separate extruded frame, this creates a lighter ambulance with enhanced strength – a standard on all Braun ambulances.

“Due to the department’s long history of outstanding performance and reliability with Braun, Rio Arriba was fully aware of exactly what they wanted in an ambulance,” says Tim Hutchens. “It was simply a matter of chassis selection for them. Since Braun builds on forty-six different chassis platforms, we worked to help educate Rio Arriba on the differences and select one fit for that task of their high call volume and vast coverage area. It was a pleasure working with them on this latest Braun ambulance.”

Congratulations to Rio Arriba County on your new Braun G450 Chief XL ambulance!
