FDIC 2016: What to Expect at the Premier Fire & EMS Tradeshow of the Year

FDIC International is arguably our biggest tradeshow of the year. Since 1979, Braun Industries has been attending the world’s largest fire training-based conference and exhibition to catch up with existing customers and introduce Braun ambulances to future users. This year, the conference celebrates its 89th year and will be held April 18-23, 2016 at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN. Braun Industries will be at the show as an exhibitor in Booth #3665.

Braun-Booth-3665

FDIC 2016 will kickoff on Monday, April 18, 2016. The first three days of the event are focused on educational opportunities such as H.O.T. Workshops and classroom sessions. The official opening ceremony will be held from 8:00 am to 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 20, 2016.

When it comes to hands on training, attendees can look forward to many exciting sessions. For those located in more rural areas, there will be a class on Farm Machinery Extrication; this session will deal with the special challenges of farm and agricultural emergencies. Nozzle Forward is another hands on opportunity that will cover fireground and drill experience. Lastly, there will be an NFPA 1403 Compliant Live Burn Training in Acquired Structures course. Students will be briefed on eight to ten live fire evolutions on a site safety plan, drill objectives, an emergency evacuation, and any relevant information regarding safety for each live fire scenario.

The planned classroom learning sessions don’t sound as thrilling as the hands on training opportunities, but they will no doubt provide valuable information.  Highlights for this year’s sessions include Successful Management of Extrications and Complex Roadway Incidents, Long-Term Injury Prevention, and Drawn by Fire: The Art of Making a Difference. Scheduled workshops include Effective Command and Operations, Human Behavior and Positive Psychology: Tools for the Firehouse, and Flawed Situational Awareness: The Stealth Killer of First Responders.

With so many first responders flocking to Indianapolis to participate in FDIC 2016, there is also a great lineup of special events planned.  Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 1:00 pm, the Firefighter Combat Challenge will be held on South Street; it will take place on Friday and Saturday as well. At 6:00 pm on Thursday, the Courage and Valor Fun Run will be held in White River State Park. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation 9/11 Stair Climb will start at 1:30 pm on Friday, April 22, 2016 and is always a highpoint of FDIC.

Both the Lucas Oil Stadium/South Street and Indiana Convention Center will have displays as part of the exhibition portion of FDIC 2016. Braun Industries will be located in Booth #3665 inside Lucas Oil Stadium, cattycorner to Safe Fleet. Exhibit hall hours are:

  • Thursday, April 21 – 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  • Friday, April 22 – 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Saturday, April 23 – 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

We will have 3 customer ambulances on display in our booth. We are also anticipating the debut of our trial rollover crash test footage, which will be shown on large displays inside our space. Stay tuned to our blog for more details in upcoming posts and don’t forget to RSVP to our Facebook event if you’re planning to attend FDIC 2016.

Braun Ambulances Is Growing: Welcome, Dennis Gallo

The Braun Industries team is growing. In fact, we’ve extended the Braun “family” to include 258 employees! Expanding our workforce has meant creating new positions to oversee them and/or our processes, and we are so pleased we’ve found some amazing individuals to help us do that. Our Executive Team is incredible; they’re all hard workers focused on ensuring Braun is THE premium ambulance manufacturer. Once such member is Dennis Gallo, our Vice President of Quality.

You may remember Dennis’s name from a few posts back when we covered the Braun Performance Excellence System. If not, that’s OK, now is your chance to get to know him better and the impact he’s making on us here at Braun Industries! Dennis’s main job responsibility is to develop systems designed to improve the quality of our vehicles and the efficiency of our business processes.

Dennis began working for Braun in March 2015. Prior to that, he had over thirty years of experience working for an automotive supplier. With three years in operations and two as an Engineering Manager, he gained most of his on-the-job knowledge from twenty-five years in quality. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. The Lean Six Sigma Methodology relies on collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing “waste.” Waste in this application is time, inventory, motion, waiting, overproduction, over processing, defects, and skills, which the program abbreviates as TIMWOODS.

When asked “Why did you want to work at Braun,” Dennis recounts, “My initial conversation with Kim Braun was all it took to convince me that I wanted to be part of her team.” Since joining the Braun family, he’s enjoyed getting to know the rest of his co-workers. He says, “The people are incredibly committed to the business, our customers and our vehicles. Everyday provides the opportunities to make a difference.” He also appreciates the professional freedom he has, to do whatever is needed to make improvements in the business for our customers.

Outside of doing his best to make Braun a better company, Dennis enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, boating, and checking out classic cars. We are blessed to have him on our staff and we’re already reaping the benefits of his hard work on the Braun Performance Excellence System. We look forward to seeing the future impact he has on Braun Industries!

A New Standard for Excellence in Building, Selling & Servicing Ambulances

Braun Industries is growing and improving, and as such, we’ve made a strategic investment to develop what we call our Braun Performance Excellence System. Overseen by Vice President of Quality, Dennis Gallo, the Braun Performance Excellence System is a framework for managing our manufacturing and business processes to build consistency and standardization. Our goal is to become THE premium ambulance manufacturer, and this system ensures everyone within our organization is aligned in support of that objective – yes, all 258 employees!

Under Dennis’s guidance, the system was developed in early 2015 and rolled out on June 1, 2015. Highlighting safety, quality, and delivery, the system relies heavily on documentation. By detailing each step of everything we do, we set clear guidelines and expectations on how things should be done. It helps identify where we have failures in meeting those standards, allowing us the opportunity to amend processes for a universal fix.

What are the Benefits to the Braun Performance Excellence System?

Internally, we believe this system helps us deliver the highest possible level of customer satisfaction. It forces us to standardize, getting everyone on the same page. When there’s an issue, we have a clear path for correcting it which translates to a better experience for our dealers and end customers. We understand that our custom ambulance units are not the least expensive in the market. However, we also understand they shouldn’t be because we’re delivering a premium ambulance. Every step in our manufacturing and business processes should reflect that first-class experience. Ultimately, this should generate leads and enable long term growth.

For our dealer network, we’re committed to increasing delivery times and improving the overall experience of working with us. An increased consistency in processes helps reduce variations from vehicle to vehicle, which in turn decreases warranty claim activity. This is a big pain point for our dealers, who are often the intermediary when an issue arises.

Most importantly are our end customers. The Braun Performance Excellence System means improvements in overall vehicle quality, consistency vehicle to vehicle, and vehicle uptime, as well as decreased vehicle operating costs. These are all critical factors for our users and we recognize that.

With a heavy focus on continuous improvement, the Braun Performance Excellence System continues to evolve. We have a method for breaking down each process in-house to track our performance. Daily, weekly, and monthly reviews are held at various levels within the organization to assess how we’re doing and where we need to make additional improvements.

How will we ensure the long-term success of the Braun Performance Excellence System?

  • We believe in investing in our people. We are committed to improving the initial and long term training of every Braun employee so they have the tools needed to succeed in their position.
  • Every work station is a chance for improvement. We look at each element of the manufacturing process to see where we can advance, believing each one is just as important as the next.
  • Improving the instructions for each manufacturing work station will help reduce errors and improve consistency.
  • A well-defined practice for continuous improvement will keep us evolving through constant self-evaluation.
  • Working closer with our suppliers, we hope to help them meet the rising performance expectations we have of them.

If you haven’t worked with Braun Industries to design and build an ambulance recently, we sincerely hope you will give us the opportunity to work with you in the future. We are eager to earn your business and the right to call ourselves THE premium ambulance manufacturer in the US. For more information on the Braun Performance Excellence System, or to get started on your next unit, give us a call at (866) 511-3745.

Braun Ambulance “All Stars” Head to New Orleans

At Braun Industries, a huge part of our success is our incredible dealer network. We work with over twenty dealerships and thirty service centers nationwide to sell, deliver, and maintain our ambulances. In fact, we’ve been working with some of our dealers for over twenty-five years now! We’re focused on building lasting business relationships that are mutually beneficial, which is why we are so excited when we have a chance to stop, celebrate successes, and catch up with representatives one-on-one.

Braun-Presidents-Club

March 3-6, 2016 we’ll enjoy a special trip to New Orleans with our 2015 President’s Club members. The President’s Club is an elite group of sales representatives throughout the Braun network that have shown their commitment to the brand by going above and beyond set sales goals. These individuals are the ones making it happen day in and day out, sharing the Braun products and quality with local departments and working hard to ensure our end customers get the ambulance they want at a price they can afford.

This year, we inducted a record number of representatives into the Club at our Annual Sales Meeting held in October. These individuals included:

  • Andy Hemierl, North Central Emergency Vehicles
  • Wayne Stowell, Ten-8 Fire Equipment
  • Fred Pawelk, North Central Emergency Vehicles
  • Shawn Hunter, Ten-8 Fire Equipment
  • Chris Woolfolk, Glick Fire Equipment
  • Bob Reilly, North Eastern Rescue Vehicles
  • Eric Wilcox, Braun Industries Direct

These fantastic sales reps and their spouses will join Braun Industries’ President, Kim Braun, and Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Chad Brown, for a long weekend in the Big Easy, compliments of Braun. The trip is a celebration of their 2015 achievements and a “thank you” from our team for their hard work and dedication. “It is really important to celebrate the wins and have time with the best of the best to talk about upcoming projects and product development,” says Chad.

Omni Royal Orleans Hotel

The entire group will be staying at the Omni Royal Orleans, a historic hotel located on a popular corner of the French Quarter. Renovated in 2013, the elegant resort features modern amenities in classic design. It is known for its 24 wrought-iron balconies and redesigned public spaces inspired by the city’s culture.

Celebrating an amazing year, the group will have days to sight see New Orleans with their guest and with each other. At night, dinners are planned to reconvene as a group. One evening, they will be joined by NOLA EMS, a high-profile Braun customer. The department has received media attention and accolades for their amazing work as filmed on the A&E reality series NIGHTWATCH. They run a highly customized version of the Braun Liberty model in their fleet.

Congratulations to all of the 2015 President’s Club Members – what an awesome group of sales representatives! We hope you have an incredible trip.

Ambulance Safety and NFPA 1917

nfpa1917

It’s been several months now since Change Notice #8 went into effect… and if you don’t know what that means, it’s time to get caught up. Ambulance safety is our top priority at Braun Industries. It’s often the defining factor that separates us from our competition and we take pride in protecting the first responders that risk their lives to serve their communities. Today, we’re going to give you a quick roll up on how ambulance standards have evolved over the years, and what you should focus on for your next bid document.

KKK-A-1822, better known as the Triple K Specifications, was the first ambulance specifications document established. Developed and published by the U.S. General Services Administration in the 1970s, it was created in an effort to refine the purchasing process for federal ambulances.  During those early years, many departments received equipment funding through block grants from the federal government and these grants required that vehicles purchased must comply with federally approved specifications. As such, KKK-A-1822 quickly became the de facto ambulance standard in the United States.

Maintaining the KKK specifications over forty years became quite a task for the General Services Administration. Most notably, an increase in the number of patients and EMS providers killed and injured in ambulance crashes highlighted the need for a more a knowledgeable organization with the technical expertise to maintain standards going forward. As a result, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the National Fire Protection Association teamed up in 2009 to develop a new standard for a safer ambulance. Their work resulted in the publication of NFPA 1917: Standard for Automotive Ambulances in August 2012. Today, NFPA 1917 has a direct impact on how ambulances are designed and built and what types of ambulances can be purchased in certain states where such standards are followed. It is an ever-evolving standard, updated routinely by change notices. The current edition is 2016, with the next one set to publish in 2019.

To stay on top of NFPA 1917 changes as they are issued, and to have a direct influence on the standard development process, we have representative, Scott Braun, on the NFPA 1917 committee. We also have alternate, Chad Brown. As change notices are released, we plan ahead and implement them into the design and build process to better serve our customers and their patients. Two such updates issued this year were Change Notice #7 and Change Notice #8.

Upcoming posts will focus on the details of Change Notice #7 and #8, outlining the details of each and how they impact ambulance design and safety. We also touch on how we’ve changed our processes to include them in our ambulance models, when applicable.

Subscribe to our blog to stay on top of new blog posts as they are published.

A Braun Ambulance Tradition: Sponsoring the EMT of the Year Award

As a family owned and operated company, we have a several long standing traditions we honor year after year. Once such tradition is the sponsorship of the NAEMT EMT of the Year Award. Through a partnership with NAEMT and EMS World, we were pleased to participate again in 2015 to honor award winner, Glen Anderson.

The 2015 NAEMT/Braun Industries EMT of the Year award was given out on September 16, 2015 in Las Vegas at NAEMT’s General Membership Meeting and Awards Presentation. The winners were also recognized during the EMS World Expo opening ceremony on September 17, 2015. The awards program was established to recognize outstanding achievements in the EMS profession. Along with the EMT of the Year Award, other awards were given out for Paid EMS Service of the Year, Volunteer EMS Service of the Year, Paramedic of the Year, Learning Educator of the Year, and Military Medic of the Year.

The 2015 NAEMT/Braun Industries EMT of the Year award winner was Glen Anderson, EMT. Mr. Anderson is Deputy Chief of Bridgewater State University Police Department. With over 30 years of experience as an emergency medical technician, Mr. Anderson is well known in his community. As such, he was nominated by colleague, Lt. Matthew T. Rushton, for “his commitment to developing a wide range of emergency medical services for the students, staff, and faculty” of Bridgewater State University. Most notably, these include purchasing and licensing the university’s first ambulance, launching their EMT program, deploying an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) program, and initiatiating CPR and First Responder training. Glen also introduced Naloxone ( better known as Narcan) to help university law enforcement offices combat the rise of Heroin overdoses, and was instrumental in policy development related to mental health issues. He currently serves as an active member of the BSU CARE Team, a multidisciplinary team of experts and points of contact that intervene daily on behalf of students.

The EMT of the Year award recognizes an emergency medical technician who demonstrates excellence in the performance of emergency medical services, with their primary role being that of prehospital patient care. Mr. Anderson was certainly a nominee well suited for the honor. During his time with the university, he’s trained more than 1,000 community members in first aid and CPR. He also earned recognition for saving the life of a member of the BSU community in 2011.

“I was certainly very honored by Lt. Rushton’s nomination,” Mr. Anderson said. “It’s a great community and it has been a great honor to be able to serve it, as well.” He credited the support he received from Bridgewater State University, Police Chief David Tillinghast, and the department for the award. “Make no mistake, it’s a team effort,” he said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the team.”

Please join us in congratulating Glen Anderson on his achievement by commenting on Bridgewater State University’s Facebook page here!

Congratulations Glen! We look forward to seeing what else you accomplish and are excited to see who steps into your shoes as the 2016 EMT of the Year!

Braun Ambulances Is Expanding Again!

As demand continues to grow for our emergency vehicles, we’re working hard to keep pace by focusing on steady growth and continuous process improvement. An important part of our development is hiring qualified personnel to join our workforce. At this time, we are pleased to welcome Jarret Hammons and Misty Landwehr to the Braun family. Jarret and Misty have been hired under the Sales Department.

Jarret Hammons is the new Region 2 Sales Manager, an essential position at Braun. The Regional Sales Manager provides support to the dealers in his region by educating them on the products and innovations unique to Braun ambulances. He also mentors them, helping to navigate dealers through the sales and delivery process, keeping an open line of communication between all parties involved in the unit purchase and build process, and assisting in the development of new business relationships and the support of ones currently in place.

Starting his new position in May 2015, Jarret joins Braun Industries with over 24 years of experience in the military. He’s a retired 1st Sergeant, and served in the United States Army and Ohio National Guard. He has a BS in Human Resources and Marketing, and also serves as the Chair for his local Fire & EMS department.

Misty Landwehr started at Braun in late June 2015. A wonderful asset to the Sales Department, Misty provides Administrative Sales Support. Her primary job responsibilities include supporting the regional sales managers in daily activities and managing important data in our delivery and warranty sales databases. Outside of Braun, Misty is currently working to obtain her Master’s degree; she has a Bachelor’s in Business Administration.

“As anyone that has hired a new employee knows… it can be a challenge to find good people,” says Chad Brown, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Braun Industries. “At Braun, we have been blessed to find so many wonderful employees that have grown with us over the years. They have immersed themselves in our family-focused company culture and they take pride in the products we build. The decision to bring on Jarret and Misty to support our existing Sales Department was an important one. We look forward to seeing them both flourish in their unique roles, and hope they will grow personally and professionally in the opportunities offered at Braun.”

Welcome to the Braun family, Jarret and Misty. We are so excited to have you and look forward to seeing the positive impact you will make on the Braun Industries team, our dealer network, and our end customers!
